Since i put the wombled shed up i have been working on the internal set up and roof in the evenings. the plan was to get the current breeding quails in by the end of the month as they were in temp accommodation in the garage. The roof has been made with freely collected roof sheets and set over the old chipboard roof with 2'' gap to prevent condensation and help with cooling and ventilating the shed. The cages in side will house the breeders and i have made a under slung poop collection system which will enable me to wash out the standing mesh without soaking the inside of the shed - this will drain down a down pipe in to a bucket , this will also keep the cleanliness level up more so when there are quail on the floor . I had to buy the timber for the main cage framing although the mesh and fixings were from the womble store . Lighting is powered from a simple 12v gell battery which will soon be charged off a solar pv panel - the set up is all automatic so will provide 18hrs of light a day [3hrs am and 3hrs pm] the rest will be done through sunlight through the windows | the lighting is produced from a flexy led which was removed from a back lit mirror and adapted to work off the 12v supply |
Soon the water will be gravity fed from an external rainwater butt and the feeders will be fitted on the outside of the cages providing more room within - and apart from feed the setup will be self sufficient - diy feeders and drinkers to come
The incubator will be coming out this week so we can start to grow the flock
Total cost so far - £ 12 excluding the birds and feed
